The Lübeck gallery team K. presents a photographic documentation by Marcus Bredt
In the middle of Lübeck Museum Night 2025, which was held under the motto “Where freedom begins…”, galerie team K. opened its doors in the historic Fischstraße 18. To kick things off, the profound exhibition “Hinter-Räume der Demokratie” (Behind Spaces of Democracy) with photographs by Marcus Bredt was presented. The exhibition, an invitation to visual reflection, can be seen until January 2026.
The art project “Hinter-Räume” pursues the fascinating ambition of looking behind the familiar facades, refining the supposedly everyday in its pure form and revealing the often overlooked self-evident aspects of existence. Marcus Bredt draws attention to places that are otherwise hidden or seem inconspicuous and documents their often seemingly installation-like, silent appearance.

The pragmatic place of choice
The current presentation forms the second chapter of this ongoing project. The focus is on spaces that once or temporarily housed important institutions – social structures that organize and control human interaction. The character of these spaces can be just as formal or informal as the institutions themselves. It is always their deep-rooted purpose that defines their destiny.
This chapter begins with the impressive series “Polling stations”.
For this work, Marcus Bredt visited and photographed over 25 polling stations on the occasion of the municipal elections in Hamburg on March 2, 2025. These simple, often functional spaces in buildings for a wide variety of purposes were briefly transformed into sacred, institutional places that are indispensable for the essential functioning of a democracy through an enormous organizational effort. They are the stage of the democratic process, reduced to the bare essentials.

The overall project: Hinter-Räume
The entire project is laid out in chapters, which will be continuously supplemented and expanded with new, discovered locations, according to the project participants. The project has already kicked off with the “Hinter-Räume der Aufklärung” (Behind Spaces of Enlightenment) at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin.
Spaces and activities that normally remain hidden from the public were documented there – a glimpse into the architecture of knowledge.
“Hinter-Räume” is an art project curated and realized by Marcus Bredt, Anke Kraemer and Hendrik Sichler. Anyone interested is cordially invited to view this fascinating photographic documentation and rediscover the invisible backdrops of our society.
CLASSIC wood 10 frames in white maple were used for the exhibition.
